Sustainability - The Language of Business

A sustainability development consists of long term, integrated, system approach to developing and achieving a healthy community by jointly addressing economic, environmental and social issues.

What is Sustainability?

The term sustainability is derived from "sustainable development" which was defined by the 1987 UN world commission on Environment & Development as :
"Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.".
Sustainability is a wider term and is defined as the inherent ability of an ecosystem to sustain itself to perpetuity by adopting an evolutionary system which moves from cradle to cradle and not cradle to grave it is multidimensional concept that has environmental, social, political, cultural and spiritual dimensions.
Sustainability is of three types :
Economic
Social
Environmental
All these are focusing on profit, people & planet, because business and environment has stressful relationship.

Why Sustainability?

Shattering of 3500 km Larsen B ice shelf in Antarctica on 5 March, 2002 has proved that human activity has catastrophic impact on the environment. Human as a species cannot survive unless we so arrange our activities and processes that we do not take out from the environment more than what we put in.
From the business point of view there are immense opportunities provided by sustainability.

Sustainability offers new options for transfer of purchasing power from those who are impacting resources to those who are conserving them.

It is a business opportunity, because it creates value with minimal impact.

Sustainability makes work for the poor, improves the quality of life, enhances natural capital and creates sustained and shared growth.

The business agenda for sustainability is enormous reduction in the consumption of resources, reduction in the impact on nature and providing new products & services

Sustainability Principles

Conserve, protect and where needed, restore the productivity of natural capital and diversity of nature.

Phase out the use and emission of Toxic minerals, metals and Fossil fuels and synthetic materials into nature. Get rid of persistent bioaccumulating toxic materials and substances.

Eliminate waste through reduction at the source and enhanced reuse, remanufacturing or recycling internally within and externally between agencies, institutions and business.

Increase the efficiency by which natural resources and energy are extracted, processed and used.
