CSR plays a crucial role in transforming the educational landscape of the country. With our constant efforts, we strive to bridge the knowledge gap, overcome main challenges, and contribute towards transforming the future of the underprivileged kids. With this vision, TS-GWI has undertaken numerous initiatives like providing scholarships, computers, books and motivating them through knowledge sharing sessions.

Jyoti Fellowship

The Jyoti Fellowship Scholarship was introduced for Class VIII students to promote the further education of the economically backward scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, needy and talented students from Dahanu and Palghar Taluka. This initiative was taken up in alignment with the central team of Tata Steel CSR – Jamshedpur. Conducted at TVM School, MIDC Boisar, the TSGW Jyoti Fellowship Selection Test witnessed a total of 120 students from various ashrams and schools from Dahanu and Palghar block. Of which, 15 students were selected.
Under Jyoti Fellowship, financial assistance is offered to meritorious students from economically backward classes to enable them to accomplish educational and career aspirations.

  • All students who receive the fellowship get financial aid annually subject to fulfilment of the set criteria.
  • A computer / tablet is given to the toppers at the School and College level, based on a certain cut off. Students from each location are shortlisted by VP, TCS and Hon. Secretary, TCS and are awarded a tablet with pre-loaded NCERT syllabus up to Class X.
  • All the students who clear the cut off for the Class VII Merit Test are eligible to receive the Fellowship. They are also awarded a certificate.

Knowledge Sharing Sessions

After many interviews conducted for ITI trade apprentice, it was observed that the educational knowledge of students coming from economically backward families was not up to the mark. So, to impart industry specific technical knowledge, we began conducting ‘Industrial Knowledge Sharing Sessions’ in Govt. ITI, Technical Institute and a local college on various subjects like, Electronics, Mechanical, Account and taxation, Store Keeping, Road Safety, General Safety and Rail Safety etc. More than 500 students benefited from these sessions.

Creating Education Awareness

Our CSR team conducted ‘Education Awareness Sessions’ to motivate students and teach them the importance of education & learning. This was carried out at various schools in Palghar District. More than a thousand students successfully participated and benefited from the session. The team also celebrated ‘International Day of Happiness’ with tribal students and conducted various games and fun activities.

Provisions of computers & Benches

While the team worked on infrastructure development in the areas around, it was observed during our visits to the nearby Ashram Schools that some schools are not even having the basic infrastructure like benches and desks. The students from standard 1 to 12 were seen sitting on floor and this was a standard practice. We observed that many of the benches and desks of one of our school nearby, which is managed by our own team, were getting replaced. We took this opportunity and in association with this school, TVM and with some of our business partners, who voluntarily worked for the repair of the removed benches and tables, and provided them to the needy Ashram schools. We have also got the opportunity to get some computers from this school, which were provided to the Ashram schools for the development of education at villages.

Provisions of Schools Bag Kits & Note books

We found that some village students were using stapled papers or old notebooks collected from scrap vendors for their studies. Many of them had a single notebook for all their subjects. This was a real concern. So, we decided to collect old newspapers from all Tata Steel - Global Wires India employees of Tarapur Plant and Goregaon Office, and recycled them to make notebooks. These notebooks were then distributed to students from various schools in Palghar District, Dhanu and Jawahar area.
